Ed Moses of the United States confirmed his supremacy in the men's four hundred metres hurdles in Koblenz on August 31 when he beat his own world record and finished in a time of 47.02 seconds. Despite the presence of Andre Phillips and Harold Schmid, Moses never looked in danger of losing, and from the fifth flight out he was on his own. A capacity crowd of twenty-two thousand people sang 'Happy Birthday' to Moses as he went on a lap of honour. It was the athlete's twenty-eighth birthday and the crowd celebrated with him. After acknowledging the cheers, Moses said he thought he could go faster. For Britain's Steve Ovett it was a disappointing night as his attempt to recapture his 1,500 metres title (taken by U.S. athlete Sidney Maree on August 28) failed. A slow opening lap put paid to any thoughts Ovett may have entertained for the record, and he said afterwards he was bitterly disappointed. Although he won the race comfortably from his compatriot Graham Williamson and West German Thomas Wessinghage, his time of three minutes 32:93 seconds was well outside Maree's three minutes 31:24 in Cologne.
