Background: LA PALMA, CHALATENANGO PROVINCE, EL SALVADOR

As Leftist guerrillas continued their January offensive in El Salvador, a Chalatenango Province village came under heavy fire and government forces were said to have been pinned down in eastern Morazan. La Palma, in Northern Chalatenango, was extensively damaged in the raid. The village was hit by fire from automatic weapons and rockets as Salvadorean troops tried to fight off the attack mounted on January 25. After overwhelming the defenders, the guerrillas left posters supporting their cause in the village, situated near the Honduras border. The Left-wing Radio Verceremos claimed a government helicopter was shot down during the raid and 16 soldiers taken prisoner. There was no immediate comment from the Salvadorean High Command on what appeared to be attempts by the guerrillas to open a new front in Chalatenango, but military analysts speculated the insurgents wanted to divert army units pushing towards a string of rebel-held towns and villages in the embattled Morazan province.
