TRANSCRIPT: BARNARD (SEQ. 6): "I'VE RECEIVED A LOT OF CREDIT AND A LOT OF PRAISE FOR WHAT WAS DONE IN DOING THE FIRST HUMAN TO HUMAN HEART TRANSPLANT IN SOUTH AFRICA. BUT I FEEL VERY MUCH LIKE THE CONDUCTOR OF AN ORCHESTRA WHICH, AFTER THE SYMPHONY'S FINISHED, HE RECEIVES THE APPLAUSE AND HE BOWS TO THE AUDIENCE, BUT HE REALISES VERY WELL THAT THE MUSIC WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE UNLESS HE HAD ALL THE INSTRUMENTS BEHIND HIM. AND, I THINK THAT MY SURGICAL COLLEAGUES ON MY RIGHT HERE, IF I CAN STILL SEE THEM, AND THEY CAN SEE ME, WILL AGREE WITH ME THAT, AS SURGEONS, WE WORK INSIDE THE BODY... AND INSIDE THE BODY EVERYBODY LOOKS THE SAME."

BARNARD (SEQ. 8): "I BELIEVE IN IT TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT IF I CANNOT CONTINUE MY WORK IN CAPE TOWN, I WILL MOVE TO A DIFFERENT CENTRE WHERE I CAN CONTINUE MY WORK. I'D LIKE TO THANK THE LOTUS CLUB FOR THIS EVENING, AND FOR GIVING DOROTHY FISHER THIS WONDERFUL MAT. AND, I'D LIKE TO ASK YOU, AS A MULTI-RACIAL ORGANISATION, TO ASSIST US TO CONTINUE THE WORK WE BELIEVE IN."

Background: SPEAKING AT A RECEPTION IN CAPE TOWN ON SUNDAY (25 APRIL) PROFESSOR CHRISTIAN BARNARD, WHO PIONEERED HEART TRANSPLANT SURGERY, SAID HE MIGHT LEAVE THE CITY'S GROOTE SCHUUR HOSPITAL WHERE HE HAS PERFORMED ALL HIS TRANSPLANTS, IF HE COULD NO LONGER DO THE WORK IN WHICH HE BELIEVED. THE RECEPTION WAS FOR A PATIENT...DOROTHY FISHER...WHO IS SOUTH AFRICA'S ONLY SURVIVING TRANSPLANT PATIENT. A WEEK EARLIER, ON THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF HER TRANSPLANT OPERATION, PROFESSOR BARNARD HAD REFLECTED THAT DOCTORS WERE NO LONGER REFERRING PATIENTS TO HIM, BUT WERE "SENDING THEM HOME TO DIE."
