Background: Thirty thousand people from many parts of Greece and the Aegean Islands on Tuesday (15 August) made the annual pilgrimage to the tiny island of Tenos to take part in the Litany of the Holy Ikon.

The Ikon is kept in the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was found in a grotto on Tenos nine hundred years ago, following an old woman's dream. The Ikon has become an object for veneration because it is reputed to have strange powers of healing.

This year's service was conducted by the Archbishop of Athens, Monsignor Ieronymos, assisted by clergy from the Cyclades Islands.
