Background: VITAL OIL DUMPS ON THE FRINGES OF HANOI AND HAIPHONG, CAPITAL AND PORT CITY OF NORTH VIETNAM RESPECTIVELY, WERE BOMBED BY AMERICAN AIR FORCE AND NAVY PLANES LAST MONTH.

THIS FILM SHOWS HANOI BLANKETED WITH A DENSE CLOUD OF BLACK SMOKE AFTER THE BOMBING ON THE AFTERNOON OF JUNE 29. THE FLAMES SENT SMOKE SPIRALLING UP TO 35,000 FEET AND SPREADING OUT FOR 50 SQUARE MILES.

NEVER BEFORE HAVE AMERICAN WARPLANES STRUCK SO CLOSE TO THE CAPITAL OR TO HAIPHONG WHERE RUSSIAN SHIPS UNLOAD LARGE QUANTITIES OF SUPPLIES ALONG WITH SHIPS FROM OTHER NATIONS.

THE NAVY PLANES FROM THE SEVENTH FLEET CARRIERS CONSTELLATION AND RANGER AND AIR FORCE FIGHTER BOMBERS UNLEASHED TONS OF BOMBS. IT DESTROYED PETROLEUM DUMPS THREE MILES FROM THE HEART OF HANOI AND TWO MILES FROM THE CENTRE OF HAIPHONG.

THE HANOI FACILITIES ARE THE PRINCIPAL IN-COUNTRY DISTRIBUTION POINT AND REPRESENT ABOUT 20 PER CENT OF THE STORAGE CAPACITY. THE HAIPHONG FACILITIES HANDLE ABOUT 95 PER CENT OF ALL NORTH VIETNAMESE PETROLEUM IMPORTS AND CONTAIN ABOUT 40 PER CENT OF THE COUNTRY'S STORAGE CAPACITY.

AT THE END OF THE ONE-HOUR BOMBING, THOUSANDS OF WORKERS DEMONSTRATED AGAINST THE BOMBING AND ACCUSED THE UNITED STATES OF ESCALATING THE WAR. THEY ALSO CALLED FOR THE EXECUTION OF CAPTURED AMERICAN PILOTS.

AT NIGHT, TOO, THOUSANDS POURED INTO THE STREETS TO WATCH ONE OF THE SEVEN CAPTURED AMERICAN PILOT PARADE THROUGH THE STREETS IN A MILITARY VEHICLE. HE IS CAPTAIN MURPHY NEAL JONES, WHOSE PLANE WAS SHOT DOWN BY ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS. THE CROWD SHOUTED "DEATH TO THE AMERICAN AIR PIRATES".
