Background: President Richard Nixon arrived in Rome last night (Sunday) at the start of his eight-day trip to Western Europe. Speaking at Quirinale Palace after being officially welcomed by President Giuseppe Saragat of Italy, President Nixon warned would-be aggressors that the United States was staying in the Mediterranean to keep the peace.

The United States President's arrival was marked by street violence in Rome as left-wing groups protesting against the President's visit fought with police. Accompanied by Mrs Nixon, the President was flown by helicopter from Ciampino Airport to the Quirinale Palace. Welcoming Mr and Mrs Nixon, President Saragat said that his country was interested in exploring ways of guaranteeing the peaceful development of the Mediterranean peoples. He described President Nixon's visit as one of "justice and peace" and thanked him for including Italy in his tour.

In reply, President Nixon said he was going to visit the sixth fleet "to discuss one of the primary and indispensable principles of American foreign policy -- that is to maintain the necessary strength in the Mediterranean to preserve the peace against those who might threaten the peace."
While in Italy, President Nixon will also hold talks with Pope Paul in the Vatican. The President's European tour will take him to Yugoslavia, Spain, Britain and Ireland.
