Background: As news comes in of border clashes between troops along the Iran-Iraq borders, this film shot by Iran Television shows Iranian troops on the alert along one of the critical points.
Official communiques on both sides claim the other to be the "aggressors".
On the Iranian side, it is said that Iraqi troops have been trying to "provoke" Iran into a major conflict. That on April 10th, three Iranian gendarmes were kidnapped by Iraqi intruders on Iranian territory. The next day, Iraqi troops supported by heavy artillery and tanks, invaded Amineh border post and were repulsed. They reattacked Amineh on April 13, also attacking Tapeh Gol, Derazad and Heyderabad border post, but again they were driven back.
On the Iraqi dies, a military communique said that they had inflicted heavy casualties on "Iranian aggressors". That the trouble has started on April 11, when Iranian troops had ambushed an Iraqi police vehicle while it was returning to Khannakin, injuring a policeman and setting the vehicle on fire.
The following day, the communique continued, Iranian Forces opened up on Iraqi police with mortars and artillery.
The Iranians say they have "so far shown extraordinary restraint, and confined themselves to defending their territories",. The Iraqis say, "Iraqi forces stand ready to repulse any attack."
SYNOPSIS: An Iranian soldier unpacks mortar shells in a trench near the border with Iraq. Since April 10th, both Iranians and Iraqis have been claiming "aggression" from the other side. Iran, with border posts like this one on the alert, says that Iraqi troops have been trying to provoke them into a major conflict. On April tenth, they claimed three gendarmes were kidnapped by Iraqi intruders in Iranian territory and that the following day, Iraqi forces invaded the Amineh border post with heavy artillery and tank support - but they were repulsed. The Iraqi version of the April eleventh action, claims that Iranian troops had ambushed an Iraqi police vehicle while it was returning to Khannakin, injuring a policeman and setting the vehicle on fire.
The conflicting versions continued the next two days. Iraq said that Iran had opened up on their police with mortars and Artillery.........Iranian sources said that Iraqis had reattacked along several points of the border - such as Tapah Gol, Darazad, Amineh and Heyderabad- and had been repulsed. To support their claims, the iranians showed mortar fragments and unexploded had grenades which, they said, has come form across the border. An Iranian source says: "Iran has so far shown extraordinary restraint and has confined itself to defending its territories". The Iraqi communique says: "Iraqi forces stand ready to repulse any attack."
