    TELERECORDING

Script is copyright Reuters Limited. All rights reserved

Background: A British soldier and three civilians were killed in gun battles between British troops and rioters in the streets of Belfast early today (Saturday). The troops came under constant sniper fire and attacks with petrol, gelignite and nail bombs. A police spokesman said the army appeared to have retaliated more strongly than ever before.

This film was telerecorded in London from coverage shot during the night by a BBC camera crew. Belfast seems set for more violence during the weekend. The violence coincides with the arrival of six hundred more troops, including the Duke of Kent, cousin of the Queen. An interview with the Duke was serviced last night (VISNEWS Production 1449/71)
