TRANSCRIPT: SEQ 5: CHIEF JUSTICE BEADLE: "GENTLEMEN, I APPRECIATE VERY MUCH INDEED YOUR WANTING TO TALK TO ME, AND I HAVE THOUGHT THIS MATTER OVER VERY CAREFULLY, AND I HAVE DECIDED THAT NO USEFUL PURPOSE AT ALL CAN BE SERVED BY MY SAVING ANYTHING. I AM VERY, VERY SORRY, BUT THERE IT IS. I AM VERY SORRY."

INTERVIEWER: "IT IS JUST A QUESTION OF HOW YOU SEE THE SITUATION AT THE MOMENT AND THE WORK THAT LIES AHEAD FOR YOU ON THE COMMISSION?"

CHIEF JUSTICE BEADLE: "I AM AFRAID I CANT ELABORATE ON WHAT I'VE SAID. I AM VERY SORRY. I'D RATHER NOT".

INTERVIEWER: "YOU COULDN'T EVEN SAY WHAT YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE DURING YOUR VISIT HERE?"

    CHIEF JUSTICE BEADLE: "NO".

INTERVIEWER: "WHAT SPECIFIC PURPOSE BRINGS YOU HERE?"

CHIEF JUSTICE BEADLE: "ONCE I START ANSWERING ONE QUESTION LEADS TO ANOTHER AND I SAID THAT NO USEFUL PURPOSE COULD BE SERVED BY MY SAYING ANYTHING AT THIS STAGE."

INTERVIEWER: "WILL YOU BE SEEING MR. WILSON THIS MORNING?"

CHIEF JUSTICE BEADLE: "THAT I DON'T KNOW. PERHAPS YOU COULD ANSWER THAT ONE (TURNING TO AIDE). I DON'T KNOW WHETHER YOU KNOW."

AIDE: "I AM AFRAID I CANT HELP EITHER".

INTERVIEWER: "WHERE ARE YOU GOING, SIR, DIRECTLY FROM THE AIRPORT?"

CHIEF JUSTICE BEADLE: "I AM GOING TO STAY AT THE ROYAL COMMONWEALTH SOCIETY WHERE I USUALLY STAY WHEN I AM IN LONDON. BUT NOW DON'T BUZZ ME UP ALL THE TIME."

INTERVIEWER: "WELL, SIR, IS THERE ANY CHANCE OF SEEING YOU LATER TODAY, OR SOME OTHER TIME. WHAT ABOUT LATER TODAY? WOULD THAT BE POSSIBLE?"

CHIEF JUSTICE BEADLE: "REALLY, I DON'T THINK I WOULD BE PRACTICABLE YOUR SEEING ME BECAUSE I DON'T FEEL IN THE POSITION OF WHICH I AM IN THAT I SHOULD SAY ANYTHING. IT'S JUST THAT. NO MATTER HOW CAREFUL I MAY BE IN EXPRESSING MYSELF I MAY SAY SOMETHING THAT'S UNFORTUNATE."

INTERVIEWER: "SIR HUGH, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR EXPRESSING YOURSELF SO FREELY".

CHIEF JUSTICE BEADLE: "I DO KNOW WHAT AN ACUTE DISAPPOINTMENT IT IS FOR YOU THAT YOU HAVE WASTED YOUR TIME COMING OUT HERE TO SEE ME. BUT I HAVE GIVEN THIS VERY CAREFUL THOUGHT AND, WELL THERE IT IS. I AM SO SORRY".

INTERVIEWER: "WELL, WE ARE EXTREMELY GRATEFUL FOR YOUR GESTURE, SIR, THANK YOU VERY MUCH INDEED."
