Background: The fate of the 21 years old son of Cyprus President Spyros Kyprianou is still unclear after the latest reported developments. Reports on Sunday (18 December) said the kidnappers of the President's son had extended their deadline yet again. Earlier, the kidnappers had threatened to kill Second Lieutenant Achilleas Kyprianou, 21, at 2000 GMT on Saturday. The kidnappers are demanding that all members of the EOKA-B terrorist group are released from jail and granted safe conduct out of the country.
SYNOPSIS: The President's wife, Mimi Kyprianou went on Cyprus television to plead with the kidnappers for her son's freedom. She broke down as she pleaded with....as she said," all the warmth of a mother's heart".
As apprehension mounted for the safety of the President's son, who was seized three days earlier at an army camp about 30 kilometres from Nicosia, crowd of demonstrators, including schoolchildren, massed to show their support for the President's stance. He has told students that he can sacrifice his son...but not his country.
The Cypriot Government met in emergency session with security chiefs...anti-terrorist experts from London's Scotland Yard are also reported to have arrived in Nicosia to help. Authorities believe that Kyprianou's son was abducted by members of the extremist Eoka-B group....an underground organisation campaigning for Cyprus to be unified with Greece. Several Eoka-B members have already been jailed for long terms...and it's their release that the kidnappers are believed to be demanding.
