INTRODUCTION: Hungary's table tennis veteran Tibor Klampar won the World Cup Championship final in Malaysia on Sunday (2 August) after an amazing comeback. Klampar was two games down against the Chinese world number three Xie Saike and seemed doomed to defeat. But he took the match through to a thrilling finale by winning the next three games in the Negara Stadium at Kuala Lumpur.

SYNOPSIS: In the opening game Xie Saike, ranked number three in the world, looked a good bet for the GBP20,000 (40,000 dollars) prize money. He controlled the play with his sharp services and speed around the table.

His returns of serve also had the Hungarian in trouble. This return won Saike the first game 21-10.

Saike was now playing with the same composure that gave him victory over world champion, Guo Yuehua in their five-game semi-final.

Klampar serves in the second game trailing 20-10 but cannot stop his opponent's winning streak.

But then things changed. Klampar took the third and fourth games, and pulled back to 18-18 in the fifth. At 20-18 he forced an error from Saike to complete his dramatic recovery, and win the championship against all the odds.
