Background: FARMERS IN BELGIUM WERE AGAIN DEMONSTRATORS AGAINST GOVERNMENT AGRICULTURAL POLICY YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). THIS PROTEST TOOK PLACE IN THE CITY OF GHENT - THE CAPITAL OF THE PROVINCE OF EAST FLANDERS.

ABOUT TWO THOUSAND PEASANT FARMERS TOOK PART IN A MARCH TO THE GHENT MUNICIPAL CENTRE. EARLIER THEY HAD SENT A NOTE TO THE CITY BURGOMASTER SETTING OUT THEIR GRIEVANCES.

THEY CLAIM THAT THEIR FARMS AND LANDS ARE BEING EXPROPRIATED BY THE GOVERNMENT. THEIR PROTEST IS AGAINST WORK ON THE WIDENING OF THE TERNEUZEN CANAL - WHICH CROSSES THEIR LAND - AND THE BUILDING OF A LARGE NEW INDUSTRIAL AREA IN THE REGION.

THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED THROUGH THE CITY STREETS SHOUTING SLOGANS AND BRANDISHING PLACARDS. A BRIEF SCUFFLE WITH POLICE BROKE OUT BUT THIS WAS SOON DISPERSED. THE DEMONSTRATORS ENDED THEIR MARCH BY SITTING ON THE ROADWAY IN AN EFFORT TO STOP TRAFFIC.
