Background: A CROWD OF OVER 100,000 JAPANESE GRAVED A HEAVY DOWNPOUR OF RAIN LAST THURSDAY AT HARA TOWN IN THE FUKUSHIMA PREFECTURE TO WATCH THE YEAR'S SPECTACULAR EVENT -- THE WARRIOR FESTIVAL.

THIS TRADITION DATES BACK TO ONE THOUSAND YEARS AGO WHEN SOMA MASAKADO, A FAMOUS JAPANESE WAR LORDS, WHO LIVED IN THIS AREA, TRAINED HIS WARRIORS.

THE YEARLY EVENT ATTRACTED ONE THOUSAND "WARRIORS" IN GROUPS OF FIVE HUNDRED. THEY WORE HEAVY MATERIAL AND IRON HELMETS. SOME RODE ON HORSES, OTHERS PARTICIPATED ON FOOT.

IN THE COLOURFUL EVENT, EACH WARRIOR CARRIED HIS OWN FLAG WITH HIS NAME WRITTEN ON IT AND THE NAME OF AN ANCESTOR WRITTEN ON HIS BACK. ONE GROUP WORE WHITE BANDS ON THEIR FOREHEADS WHILE THE OTHER GROUP WORE RED.

PRIOR TO THE START OF THE EVENT, THE WARRIORS IN TRADITIONAL BATTLE DRESS PARADED THROUGH THE TOWN BEFORE ASSEMBLING ON A VAST FIELD WHERE THEY FACED EACH OTHER. AT A GIVEN SIGNAL, THREE SACRED FLAGS -- RED, BLUE AND YELLOW -- WERE LAUNCHED HIGH UP IN THE AIR WITH THE AID OF FIRE-WORKS IN THE FORM OF A ROCKET.

SOON AFTER THE LAUNCHING, THE WARRIORS -- ARMED WITH LANCES AND SWORDS -- SCRAMBLED FOR THE FLAGS. THE HORSES USED IN THE EVENT WERE TRAINED MORE THAN A MONTH AGO.
