Background: A group of nine Tupamaros guerrillas released by the Uruguayan authorities left Montevideo for Chile on Friday (7 May). After being legally released, the men preferred to leave for Chile rather than face the possibility of constant surveillance by the police. With the group were six Mexicans who had been told to leave the country or face arrest. Tupamaros guerrillas have been involved in several political kidnappings and acts of violence during recent months. Cameraman Alfredo Pucciano was at Montevideo Airport by chance at the time of the unannounced departure of the exiles.
SYNOPSIS: At Montevideo Airport on Friday nine exiled Tupamaros guerrillas prepared to leave Uruguay on a flight to Chile. They had earlier been legally released by the authorities, and had preferred to leave the country rather than face the prospect of constant surveillance by the police. Tupamaros guerrillas have been involved in several political kidnappings and acts of violence in recent months.
There was a small crowd of relatives and friends to see them off. Also on the flight were six Mexicans who had been warned to leave Uruguay at the first opportunity if they wished to avoid arrest. The exiles' unannounced departure was filmed by a cameraman who happened to be at the airport.
