Background: America's top seeded player in the Wimbledon Championships, Mrs. Billie-Jean King, today (Saturday) had an easy win over Italy's Miss Lea Pericoli. Mrs. King only needed two sets to demolish the young Italian 6-1; 6-2.
Mrs. King, who lost in last year's final to Britain's Mrs. Ann Jones after holding the title for three previous years, had little to do in today's match to hold down the Italian player.
Miss Pericoli had the advantage of a bye early in the competition, but had done well to reach the fourth round. She had little chance however against the strong and accurate Mrs. King, who is expected to meet Australia's Margaret Court in this year's final.
SYNOPSIS: Top-seeded American player Mrs. Billie-Jean King meets Italy's Miss Lea Pericoli in the fourth round of the Ladies Singles championship at Wimbledon. Miss Pericoli, who had done well to reach this stage, took a few points from the former champion, but never looked like presenting a serious challenge.
Mrs. King, who lost in last year's final to Britain's Mrs. Ann Jones, raced through the first set conceding only one game.
Miss Pericoli gained two early games in the second set, but after that she was unable to gain any further headway as Mrs. King's accuracy and experience began to tell.
It was an easy win for Mrs. King, who is expected to meet Australia's Margaret Court in the final.
