    TRANSCRIPT: CU Mike Hawthorn: "To be quite honest, I don't really know myself why I did retire; but mainly I think because I got where I wanted to. I got to the top which is everybody's ambition in their particular business, sport or trade and I did also get a garage and quite frankly needed more and more of my attention and I found that my racing was going to interfere with it which of course it shouldn't do. It was actually motor racing or trying to become a businessman. I have had eight years of racing and in eight years I got to the top so I decided now's the time."

    Background: Visnews interviewed World Champion Racing Driver Mike Hawthorn at the National Sporting Club - where he was a guest of honour - 3 days before his ironical and tragic death on Jan. 22, in his dark green 3.4 litre Jaguar.

    Hawthorn was presented an antique cocktail cabinet in recognition of his winning the world title. Leading British sportsmen were at the Club Dinner to honour Mike Hawthorn, first British racing driver to win the World Championship. These dinners to men of strength and courage are sparingly given.

    In his speech Mike detailed his reasons for retiring....
    Hawthorn's first major race put him straight into the headlines. Driving a Cooper-Bristol at the Goodwood Easter Monday meeting, 1952, he beat the great Argentinean ace Juan Fangio, World Champion.

    During that first year of international racing Hawthorn made his mark - in the Grand Prix d'Europe at Spa-Francorchamps, where he finished fourth; at Boreham, where on a soaking wet track he led Villoresi's Ferrari until the rain stopped and eventually he was forced out of the race with engine trouble; next at Zandvoort, Rheims, and in the French Grand Prix at Rouen. He drove for Norman Garrad in the Alpine Rally and gained the coveted 'Coupe des Alpes', a remarkable feat for one who had never previously driven in any sort of competitive rally.

    Next Silverstone and the British Grand Prix in which he was third, behind the Ferraris of Ascari and Farina. After this event, at the Monza circuit, he started his association with Scuderia Ferrari. Mike was entered with the Cooper-Bristol but crashed during a practice run and ended up in hospital.
