Background: THE RAIN-DELAYED MEN'S SINGLES FINAL IN THE UNITED STATES OPEN LAWN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP AT FOREST HILLS, NEW YORK, YESTERDAY (8 SEPTEMBER) MADE A NOTABLE DAY IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME WHEN ROD LAVER, OF AUSTRALIA, BEAT HIS COUNTRYMAN TONY ROCHE 7-9, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, TO BECOME THE FIRST MAN TO WIN THE GRAND SLAM -- THE CHAMPIONSHIPS OF AUSTRALIA, FRANCE, WIMBLEDON, AND THE UNITED STATES IN ONE SEASON -- FOR A SECOND TIME.

THE RED-HEADED QUEENSLANDER, 31, ALSO COLLECTED $16,000 (ABOUT GBP6,600 STERLING) TO ROUND OFF A GREAT SEASON.

LAVER BECAME ONLY THE SECOND PLAYER TO ACHIEVE THE GRAND SLAM IN 1962 WHEN HE WAS STILL AN AMATEUR. THE ONLY OTHER PLAYER TO WIN ALL FOUR TOP TROPHIES IN THE SAME SEASON WAS DONALD BUDGE, OF THE UNITED STATES, IN 1938.

A RUNNING FOREHAND ON THE SLIPPERY WEST SIDE TENNIS CLUB CENTRE GRASS COURT GAVE LAVER A BREAKTHROUGH IN THE OPENING GAME OF THE FOURTH SET, WHICH ENDED ALL ROCHE'S HOPES OF SCORING AN UPSET OVER THE PLAYER HE HAS BEATEN FOUR TIMES IN SIX MEETINGS THIS YEAR.

THE MATCH WAS DELAYED 90 MINUTES BY A HEAVY RAIN AND INTERRUPTED FOR 30 MINUTES AT THE START OF THE THIRD SET, AND, ALTHOUGH A HELICOPTER HOVERED OVER THE COURT FOR HALF AN HOUR IN AN ATTEMPT TO DRY IT WITH ITS DOWNDRAUGHT, THE PLAYING CONDITIONS WERE FAR FROM GOOD.

THE DUEL OF LEFTHANDERS MARKED ONLY THE SECOND TIME TWO AUSTRALIANS HAVE FOUGHT OUT THE FINAL OF THE FOREST HILLS TOURNAMENT SINCE 1960, WHEN NEALE FRASER DEFEATED LAVER.
