TRANSCRIPT (SEQ 3): KARAMI: "The opening of the canal of Suez is of great importance due to its relation in the economics of Europe and Asia and all over the World. It is another sign - a sign which proves that Arabs, and especially Egypt, want peace. And it proves also that the policy of Israel, which led to the "fermeture" of this canal, made Israel responsible for all damages which have been done since 1967 to the international economy. I think that this canal is going to provide great facilities for all states, and this is good for all, and especially for Lebanon.

Background: The re-opening of the Suez Canal today (5 June) was seen by the Lebanese Prime Minister designate, Rachid Karami, as a sign of the Arab world's desire for peace.

Mr. Karami, speaking in Beirut, blamed the closure of the canal on Israel, whose policies he said made the Israelis responsible for the resulting damage to the international economic.

The re-opening of the canal had great economic significance, especially for Lebanon.

The Suez Canal has been closed since the 1967 middle East war. It was ceremonially re-opened by President Sadat of Egypt in Port Said on Thursday (5 June).)
For the next two weeks, only one convoy of ships a day will move through the canal. After that, the normal three convoys a day will be run.

(A transcript of Mr. Karami's speech follows.)
