Background: A specially chartered plane took President Bayer of Turkey to Tempelhof Airport, West Berlin, from Frankfurt, on Sunday afternoon, 11th May. This visit was port of the President's unofficial programme, the main part having finished on Saturday evening, 10th May.
At West Berlin the 19-strong Turkish party was met by the Mayor of the City, Herr Brandt, the President of the City's Parliament, Her Hanneberg and by representatives of the Western Allies in Berlin. A West Berlin police band played the Turkish and German National Anthems and the President inspected a guard of 100 mounted policemen. His visit will last for about two days.
During Sunday, 11th May, there was a reception at the Turkish Consulate, Berlin. Later a concert was given to honour of the Turkish President by the Berlin City Orchestra and the sixteen year old Turkian pianist, Idil Biret, a young girl of international fame.
On Monday, 12th May, the President went to the Free University of Berlin where he was awarded the honorary title of Doctor of Economic and Social Sciences by the Dean of the University. Afterwards the President attended a reception at the City Hall, seat of the City Parliament. The readliner of his West Berlin stay was spent in the Federal President's Berlin residence in the Grunewalder suburb, a wooded part of the city.
