Background: There was a major upset in prospect during the final stages of the punishing Ethiopian highland Rally on Saturday (December 12). Kenya's Joginder Singh. Who had built up a convincing lead in his flat, was held up for three hours with mechanical troubles.
Once again, the rally proved its reputation as one of the toughest in the world. Mountain and desert conditions took a heavy toll of entrants.
During the four-day rally, the drivers have to cover a route of 2,375 miles (3,800 Kms) over Ethiopia's most tortuous roads.
By the finish in Addis Ababa, only 14 of the original 31 starters were still in the rally.
With the official results still to be announced, it seemed that Joginder Singh's three-hour delay had cost him victory.
He was 11th across the finish line, and may have yielded first place to West Germany's Herrmann and Sweden's Niskanen in a Renault, or to the Tanzanian team of shankland and Bates in a Peugeot.
