Background: Reconstruction of the Jewish quarter of Jerusalem's Old city has been going on for years, almost ever since Israeli troops in '67 occupied the Eastern part of Jerusalem, occupied by the Jordanians in 1948. Whilst the Christian, the Armenian, the African and the Moslem quarter of the Old City were left untouched during the Jordanian occupation, all Jews were evicted from the Jewish quarter/1 in the 1948 war and the quarter was mostly destroyed. Synagogues were used as stables, houses were given t Arabs for the asking and the Jewish cemetery on the Mt. of Olives was desecrated. This led the Israelis to embark after '67 on a very intensive reconstruction program of the Jewish quarter and its resettlement. Religious Institutions reoccupied their former buildings or rebuilt on the ruins of the rubble of the old ones, Israel's Dep.PM and FM Allon built his Jerusalem home in the Jewish quarter and so did the State Comptroller Dr. Nebenzahl and many of the Jews who had lived there 25 years earlier, or the next generation of those families. During the rebuilding of one of these houses and the digging of canal for drainage pipes, one of the temporary retaining walls collapsed shortly after noon today and several of the Arab labourers were buried under the rubble. Three of them only slightly buried were extracted almost immediately as police and the Jerusalem firebrigade arrived on the scene - a fourth Arab worker, buried entirely under the sand and rocks could only be freed after about 1 1/2 hours but was also found alive and breathing; a fifth worker suffered from shock. - Present to watch the rescue operation was Jerusalem's Mayor Mr. Kollek.- No sabotage was suspected.
