Background: IN SINGAPORE ON SUNDAY NIGHT MORE THAN 100,000 PEOPLE OF VARIOUS RACES ATTENDED THE JAPANESE "BLOOD DEBT" RALLY.IT WAS ORGANISED BY THE CHINESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND SPONSORED BY THE SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT.

VARIOUS COMMUNITY LEADERS SPOKE AT THE RALLY WHICH WAS THE BIGGEST IN POSTWAR YEARS.THEY CALLED UPON THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT FOR A "REASONABLE SETTLEMENT" OF THE JAPANESE "ATONEMENT GESTURE" FOR WARTIME ATROCITIES.

ON THE GOTHIC PILLARS OF THE HALL WERE HUNG BANNERS SHOWING VARIOUS TORTURES PRACTISED BY THE JAPANESE, THE INFAMOUS COLLECTION OF COLLECTIVE FINES FROM THE CHINESE COMMUNITY AND OTHER OFFENCES COMMITTED BY THE OCCUPYING ARMIES.

THE CHINESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CHAIRMAN, MR.KO TECK KIN, TOLD THE RALLY THEY WERE ENGAGED IN A STRUGGLE BETWEEN JUSTICE AND FOUL PLAY."THE SPIRIT OF THE RALLY HAS SHOWN THAT JUSTICE WILL TRIUMPH AND JAPANESE MACHINATIONS WILL FAIL," HE ADDED.

SINGAPORE'S PRIME MINISTER, MR.LEE KUAN YEW, WAS BOOED WHEN HE WALKED TO THE MICROPHONE.HE REPEATEDLY CHALLENGED THE LEADERS OF THE PROTESTING GROUP TO COME FORWARD AND STATE THEIR CASE.NONE ANSWERED, BUT WHEN SPOTLIGHTS WERE TURNED ON THEIR FACES THEY TURNED THEIR BACKS.
