Background: Filmed at London Airport, October 21, Pan American's Boeing 707, rival to Britain's Comet 4 in the transatlantic jet service race, later left on a Press flight to New York.
Captain is filmed at interview (SOF) before take-off.
The plane completed the 3,875-mile flight in 9 hours, 30 minutes, including a refuelling stop at Keflavik, Iceland. Actual flying time was 8 hours 30 minutes.
Although beaten in the race to carry the first fare-paying passengers across the Atlantic by Comet 4, the Boeing may still be the first with a regular service.
The Comet, hit by the B.O.A.C. strike at London Airport, is still in danger of not being ready for the first scheduled daily service on November 14. Crews are putting in extra flying hours in an effort to be fully trained in time but the eight-day delay in the training schedule meant that the Boeing was back in the race.
