Background: Seven people were killed and four injured when a fire sept through a 500 room hotel in Cleveland on Tuesday night (13 April). Many of the two hundred guests had to be removed by ladder to escape the thick smoke. Among the dead are the wives and children of two members of a road show production of the musical, "Hair".
The blaze in the Pick-Carter hotel produced the worst death toll in a Cleveland fire in ten years. Fire officials have not discovered a cause for the fire, but arson has not yet been ruled out. Inspectors of the police and fire departments believed all the residents would have been saved if they had remained in their rooms, instead of seeking escape.
