CHARLES: "And I'd like to say that I'm happy. But I'd be much happier when my fellow prisoners of war are able to return home. It is my belief, and the belief of the men with whom I lived in Hanoi, that if the war terminated their return home would be soon. I've committed myself to do everything in my power to work for their return home."



CARTLEY: "These small releases are very significant for the people involved, although we must keep in mind the men we've left behind are still being shot down and captured. These people are our primary interest at this point."

Background: The three captured American pilots released by the North Vietnamese 11 days ago arrived in Copenhagen on Thursday (28 September) on routs for the United States, and home.

Major Edward Elias and Lieutenants Norris Charles and Markham Gartley told their Danish news conference they were pledged to work for the release of U.S. prisoners still held in North Vietnam.

SYNOPSIS: A plane arrives at Copenhagen airport carrying the three American pilots, recently released by the North Vietnamese.
