Background: THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL IS CONTINUING ITS DISCUSSIONS ON RHODESIA: IT HAS TWO DRAFT RESOLUTIONS BEFORE IT - ONE PROPOSED BY THE BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY ASKING FOR SUPPORT FOR MEASURES ALREADY TAKEN BY BRITAIN, AND A STRONGER ONE FROM THE IVORY COAST CALLING FOR STRONGER MEASURES, INCLUDING MILITARY FORCE.

THE BRITISH RESOLUTION IS CONSIDERED BY SOME NATIONS TO BE NOT STRONG ENOUGH, WHILE THAT OF THE IVORY COAST - WHICH IS SUPPORTED BY ALL AFRICAN MEMBERS OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL - IS THOUGHT BY OTHERS TO BE TOO STRONG.

THE BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR. STEWART, PRESENTED THE BRITISH RESOLUTION ON SATURDAY, WHEN HE DEFENDED HIS GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO REFRAIN FROM USING MILITARY FORCE.

DURING THE WEEKEND DELEGATES TO THE SECURITY COUNCIL WILL HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONSULT THEIR GOVERNMENTS ON BOTH RESOLUTIONS.
