Background: Riot police used tear gas on friday in Seoul in a battle with some three hundred protesting students. The students are demonstrating against the intrusion of troops on to the Korean University Campus. The Incidents followed week of sporadic demonstrations by small groups of students denouncing alleged official corruption and social immorality. Earlier this week, thirty soldiers entered the campus and arrested and beat five of the students.
SYNOPSIS: Demonstrations continued in Seoul South Korea on Friday. Students at the Korean University marched in protest against the presence of troops on the campus.
The students, some three hundred strong threw rocks and missiles at the riot police stationed at the campus. Police retaliated by firing tear gas canisters at the angry demonstrators.
Friday's violent confrontations followed a week of sporadic demonstrations by smaller groups of students denouncing alleged official corruption and social immorality. According to University President Sang-Hyup Kim, 30 soldiers entered the campus earlier in the week and arrested and beat up five students. The students, incensed by the actions and the presence of troops on the campus, organised in larger numbers to confront the police.
