Background: In Turkey six people have died and almost 100 have been injured in fighting between left and right wing political fractions at Sivas, east of the capital Ankara.

SYNOPSIS: The casualties have come in two days of politically motivated violence which has rocked the nation. On Monday (4 September) a battalion of commandos was sent into Sivas to restore order.

The troops were ordered in to help gendarmes already sent from two nearby towns, after three people were killed and wounded in street battles. On Sunday (3 September) six people were killed during a major confrontation between rival Moslem groups. Rampaging mobs damaged about 700 stores in the city, and hurled stones and bottles at the local government headquarters, the governor's office and two police stations. They also set fire putting out the blaze.

The violence caused the cancellation of celebrations to mark the 59th anniversary of the Sivas Congress and instead the city was placed under curfew. Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit has deplored the latest hostilities saying it showed political divisions in the country had reached a dangerous level.
