Background: Thousand of demonstrators marched through Madrid on June 8 calling for more help for the victims of Spain's poisoned cooking oil scandal. About 20,000 Spaniards have allegedly been poisoned by the oil. Of these, 271 have died, but many more have suffered crippling injuries. The oil was in fact cheap rapeseed oil treated for industrial use but flavoured with olive oil. It was sold by door to door salesmen. The protesters want more help for the victims, many of whom are foodstuffs. Many victims have not been compensated, in spite of official moves to ease their plight.
