STARMER-SMITH: "Brian Williams, the throw in, I think Quinell held that back, Bennett runs out into defence, there's plenty of space there and clever little kick up to half-way line and Bennett follows it up with a fly half. Farrell misses the pick up, Duggan through with the boot, and that was a lucky one straight to Gordon Brown, up to the All Blacks twenty two, Quinell again, McGeechan, J.J. Williams with Irving outside, a good dummy from Williams and that's a great try. Price at the front, from Wheeler well back to Brimbel (phon). Williams lovely service to Bennett, Fenwick it is now, Fenwick's still going...what a strong run, tries to find support and gets it from Wheeler, there's only Farrell to beat and Wheeler cutting inside the Lions flip it back, and Going surely was off-side. Bennett's then has got it, Farreel restarts, very hard through Andy Haden, taken by Kirkpatrick, Kirkpatrick has support from Bush, Going, Bruce, Osborne, Jaffray going on, Kirkpatrick in support, Going again, Bruce, Jaffray, tries to find Taylor, Taylor cutting..... ......back inside, the Lions there are not grounding their man, the ball comes back, All Blacks in possession, eight metres out Going losing it first time Brown comes through on his off-side. Brian Williams then from twenty metres not a difficult kick, thirteen points to three, the British Isles lead....as he runs up and kicks it high through the uprights."

Background: The British Lions Rugby Union touring team won their first ever international at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, New Zealand on Saturday (9 July) when they beat the New Zealand All Blacks team 13-9 in the second game of a four-match test series. The Lions' victory was based on superb forward effort, particularly in the first half, in which the Welsh wing forward Terry Cobner and his pack dominated their illustrious All Black opponents in lineouts and mauls. Here's Nigel Starmer-Smith with a commentary on highlights of the game.
The Lions' win means that the series now stands at one game all. The third test will be played at Dunedin in three weeks time. The only try of Saturday's match was scored in the first half, when the Lions captain, Phil Bennett, kicked a deft ball above the heads of the All Blacks backs and was able to speculate it ahead.
