Background: A NEW PLANT FOR HOMOGENISING MILK HAS GONE INTO OPERATION IN KITWE ZAMBIA IS BELIEVED TO BE THE FIRST COUNTRY ON THE CONTINENT TO HAVE THE EQUIPMENT, IMPORTED FROM SWEDEN AT A COST OF GBP6,000.

ACCORDING TO A SPOKESMAN FOR ZAMBIA'S DAIRY PRODUCE BOARD, THE EQUIPMENT "BRINGS US RIGHT UP TO DATE WITH SUCH COUNTRIES AS THE UNITED STATES AND SWEDEN, WHERE ALMOST ALL MILK IS HOMOGENISED...THE EXTRA COSTS INVOLVED IN INSTALLING THE MACHINERY IS BEING ABSORBED THROUGH GREATER EFFICIENCY. UNLIKE IN OTHER COUNTRIES, THE INTRODUCTION OF THE PROCESS WILL NOT RESULT IN A PRICE INCREASE."
THE DAIRY PRODUCE BOARD AT KITWE SUPPLIES THE MILK FOR THE WHOLE OF ZAMBIA'S COPPER BELT. PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA RECENTLY SAID THAT HE WANTED TO SEE EVERYONE IN ZAMBIA DRINKING A PINT OF MILK DAILY BY 1970.

FOR HYGIENMIC REASONS, ZAMBIAN MILK IS NO LONGER MARKETED IN BOTTLES, BUT IN CARTONS.
