Background: Two French petroleum companies, Total and Triton, are jointly pursuing an active oil exploration programme in the so-called "Paris Basin" region -- the "departement" known as "Ile-de-France". Government licenses to begin drilling were issued in July, 1980, for a four-year trial period, and were production facility, to be based at Maclaunay, were unveiled on November 29. Positive results from Total-Triton's first exploratory phase have prompted the geological team to intensify its activities. At least fifty additional shafts will be sunk during the coming year, an indication of the explorers' belief that oil in commercial quantities exists in Ile-de-France fields no previously tapped. It is predicted that production levels in 1985 will surpass those of 1984 by more than three times the current amount.
