Background: Thousands of people have been made homeless in southern Italy after a series of earth tremors hit the region. Maya have spent two nights in makeshift shelters, and building experts have assessed damage running into million dollars. Government officials say there are at least five thousand people made homeless by the earthquakes and at least eighty people have been injured. Three people died of shock and heart attacks. The Italian army has set up mobile kitchens in temporary tented villages. Several officials in the region have criticised the Government's handling of relief operations. The earthquake measured eight on the open-ended Mercalli scale.
