Background: A powerful Polish team carried off the World Volleyball Championship on Monday when they defeated Olympic gold medalists Japan in the final.
Poland won all five of their final-round games and pushed Japan into third place behind the Soviet Union.
The Polish team played more consistently than their opponents in the final and won 13-15, 15-7, 15-11, 17-15.
A desperate Japanese come-back almost swung the game their way in the final set but, overall, they threw away their chances with uncontrolled attacking shots.
The Japanese went ahead early in the first set and managed to hold the Polish team to 13 points to the Japanese 15.
But from then on there was no stopping the Polish team.
In the last set Japan was down 3-13 when they suddenly opened an attack to tear holes in the Polish defence. At one point the Japanese were winning 15-14 but the Poles recovered their nerve and won the set 17-15.
SYNOPSIS: In the last set the Japanese fought back. They cama from trailing the Polish players by ten points - at three - thirteen to lead briefly fifteen to Fourteen. But they couldn't sustain their effort and went down seventeen-fifteen.
So, the Polish team won all five of its last-round matches....the Soviet Union came second and Japan - who won the Gold medal at the last Olympics - finished third.
