Background: About 1,000 Italian students took part in a large and violent demonstration outside the Chamber of Deputies in Rome, October 11, in protest against the campaign being conducted in Austria to bring independence to a the Alto-Adige region, the Italian Lower Tyrol Police were forced to move in on the mob and arrest one man when scuffles broke out at the entrance to the Chamber.

A five man delegation accompanied by tow neo-Fascist deputies was admitted to the Chamber and presented a petition calling for the continued Italianisation of the Alto-Adige. The Lower Tyrol came into Italian hands at the end of the first World War.

Moving from the Chamber of Deputies, demonstrators marched to the Austrian Embassy and overcome the few police on guard outside the building. Cheering broke out when the Austrian flag was burned on the steps. Several men ripped the Austrian shield from the Embassy wall and carried it away. About 100 police were rushed to the Embassy, but it was some time before the crowd could be brought under control.
