Background: Chinese Premier Chou En-Lai gave a Press conference in Delhi April. 25. About the Sino-Indian border dispute he said that in the eastern sector China was wiling to maintain "the present state", although not accepting the McMahon Line.

He had asked that India should take a similar attitude towards the border in the Ladakh area, and not across the line up to which China exercised its jurisdiction. The conference lasted three hours.

April 26 Mr. Chou En-Lai left Delhi airport for a visit to Nepal, and Mr. Nehru was there to say farewell.

Their talks had not resulted in agreement on the border question, but it was arranged that Indian and Chinese committees should thoroughly examine the dispute, and that Mr. Nehru should visit China for further talks when convenient to him.
