Background: Following their victory over the Mali football team by a 3 - 2 margin, last Sunday (10 January), U.S. Valenciennes of France were feted by other hosts in Bamako with a reception at the Sporting Club.
Among those attending the reception was the President of the football league of the Bamako region, Mr. Adama Traore. He said that the match was beneficial in that it helped the Mali team to gain experience and was a means of bringing football onto a higher international level.
The French team's trainer, M. Robert Domergue, said the country's climate of promoting sport could only provide a brighter outlook for the nation's athletic contests.
Guests at the reception were entertained by musicians from National Instrumental Ensemble of the Republic of Mali. The Ensemble won a gold medal at the Pan-African Festival in Algiers last year. The French team danced with their hosts to the strains of traditional African music.
Dance groups also participated in the entertainment at the reception, providing both modern and traditional examples.
