Background: Making his first visit to the United Arab Republic, the Nigerian head of state Major-General Yakubu Gowon, flew into Cairo yesterday (Friday) and was warmly greeted by President Nasser. During the four-day official visit, the two leaders plan wide-ranging talks of subjects of mutual and international importance.
The Middle East situation was among the first topics touched on when discussions began. President Nasser was reported to have told General Gowon that Israel was trying to undermine the current Middle East peace initiatives. At the same time, the Egyptian leader spoke of his gratitude to the Nigerian people for supporting the Arab cause in the Middle East confrontation.
The two leaders are also discussing the non-aligned summit conference to be held next week in Lusaka, and are reviewing progress of the recent Organisation of African Unity conference in Addis Ababa.
On Friday evening, General Gowon was guest of honour at a state banquet. His visit -- originally planned for three days -- was extended to enable him to visit Alexandria.
