Background: Twenty-five years ago Anwar Sadat, now President of the United Arab Republic, was tried - and acquitted - of the murder of a former minister. Yesterday (Tuesday) he returned to the courtroom where his trial was held and conferred the Republican Medal on two of the lawyers who conducted the case.

President Sadat was accused in 1946 of the murder of Sir Amin, Finance Minister of the then Wafdist Party and an alleged supporter of British occupation of Egypt. Sir Amin had been shot dead as he visited his old school club in central Cairo.

The President embraced and kissed two lawyers who played an important part in his trial and acquittal, Judge Ibrahim Khalid and former prosecutor Anwar Habib. He was accompanied by the country's two Vice-Presidents, Mr Aly Sabry and Mr Hussein el Shafei.

After his visit to the courtroom where he once stood trial, the President went on to address the country's highest legal body, the Supreme Judicial Council, which exists to guarantee the independence of the judicial system. He told members of the judiciary: "I had never dreamt the day would come when I would move from the prisoner's dock to the presidency".
