In a World Cup qualifying match, Portugal beat Sweden 1-0 on September 12 in Stockholm. Sweden had crushed Portugal in the last World Cup qualifying campaign and dominated the game for long periods in this match. But they were unable to break down a strong Portuguese defence. Fernando Gomes scored Portugal's winner 11 minutes from the end of the match with a close-range header.

On the same day, the Republic of Ireland scored a surprise win over the Soviet Union in Dublin. Playing in Europe's Group Six World Cup qualifying round, the Soviet Union had been confident of victory before the game, but were never able to take charge. A fine save by Soviet goalkeeper Dasaey in first half was followed by a Soviet goal from a free kick, but it was disallowed. Ireland's goal came in the 60th minute with a shot from the edge of the penalty area by Mick Walsh. The Soviet Union fought back, with Sergei Rodionov rattling the bar from 20 metres two minutes from time. Irish goalkeeper Jim McDonagh made a brilliant save from Gennady Litozchenko's first-time volley from the rebound to keep the Irish ahead.

Another World Cup qualifier saw a confident win by Switzerland over Norway in Oslo. Switzerland had suffered a string of recent defeats but clinched victory with a goal after just three minutes of play. Norwegian captain Svein Gronadalen handled the ball in the penalty area and Borussia Dortmund striker Andy Egli converted the spot kick. A ragged-looking Norwegian side were unable to equalise.

Wales were surprisingly defeated by lowly Iceland in Reykjavik in another World Cup qualifying match when Magnus Bergs scored in the 50th minute from a corner kick. The Welsh defence was in disarray as Bergs' header flew into the net from 5 metres (yards). Wales tried desperately to equalise but a defender and then the Iceland goalkeeper Sigurdsson saved shots by Robbie James and Jeremy Charles, to keep the home side's lead intact.
