Background: The world famous film star, Charlie Chaplin, at the age of 82, is to return to the United States on Monday (3 April), the first time since his entry permit was rescinded in 1952. He will go to Hollywood -- where his career was made -- on April 10th to receive a special Academy Award. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said that the veteran comodiar has refused similar invitations in previous years.

Chaplin was born in a London slum in 1889, and the unique blend of humour and pathos that characterises his films derives much from the hardship of his early years. He went to Hollywood and, by the age of 27, was a millionaires. He was best known for his portrayal of the baggy-trousered tramp battling against all odds.

In the 1940's his widespread activities and choice of friends led to investigations being carried out by the Dies Committee and the House Committee on Un-American activities. Investigations were renewed in the 195 and, when Chaplin took his family for a holiday in Europe in 1952, his re-entry permit was rescinded. He has since made his home at Vevey in Switzerland. Until recently he was still active in planning films.

The news of his imminent arrival in America comes amidst an increased interest in his life and work, brought about by the sale of nine of his major films to an American Producer, Moses Rothman.
