    Background: GIBRALTAR

The Spanish siege of Gibraltar begun twelve years ago when General Franco ordered the border gates closed after Britain had rejected Spanish claims to sovereignty over the Rock. General Franco believed that by strangling the colony economically, Gibraltar would soon return to Spain. Communications were cut on either side of the border, but the siege seemed only to increase the patriotic fervour of the residents. When Prince Charles and the Princes of Wales visited Gibraltar to board the royal yacht Britannia to start their honeymoon last July, the local citizens painted the streets and walls of the town in the traditional British colours of red, white, and blue. The decision by the British government to close the navy dockyard, however, is the most serious threat yet faced by the Gibraltar community. It is estimated that 2,000 jobs will disappear, and is viewed by many as a prelude to the hand-over of the Rock to Spain
