Background: WORLD CHAMPIONS ENGLAND SWEPT TO A 3-1 VICTORY OVER BELGIUM IN BRUSSELS LAST NIGHT (25 FEB.) IN THEIR LAST OVERSEAS MATCH BEFORE THEY SET OUT TO DEFEND THE JULES RIMET TROPHY IN MEXICO IN JUNE.

ENGLAND, WHO HAD SCORED ONLY FOUR GOALS IN THEIR SIX PREVIOUS INTERNATIONALS, CAME BACK TO GOAL-SCORING FORM AND NETTED THREE GOALS IN AN OVERSEAS MATCH FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE 1966 WORLD CUP.

ALAN BALL SCORED TWO OF ENGLAND'S GOALS AND THE OTHER WAS FROM GEOFF HURST. BELGIUM'S GOAL WAS SCORED FROM A FREE KICK BY J. DOCKX.

BELGIUM, DRAWN IN WORLD CUP FINAL GROUP I WITH MEXICO, EL SALVADOR, AND THE SOVIET UNION, HAD BEEN EXPECTED TO PROVIDE TOUGH OPPOSITION FOR THE WORLD CHAMPIONS AFTER THEIR RUNAWAY QUALIFYING-GROUP SUCCESS AGAINST SPAIN AND YUGOSLAVIA. BUT ENGLAND SEEMED TO REVEL ON THE RAIN-SODDEN PITCH AND PUT BELGIUM UNDER PRESSURE AT THE START. BELGIUM HIT BACK AFTER ENGLAND'S OPENING BURST, HOWEVER, AND VAN MOER AND DEVRINDT BOTH WENT CLOSE.

BALL SCORED IN THE 28TH MINUTE, SHOOTING HOME FROM CLOSE RANGE AFTER HURST AND PETERS HAD SPLIT THE BELGIAN DEFENCE.

ENGLAND MAINTAINED THEIR LEAD UNTIL HALF-TIME AS DRIVING SLEET AND SNOW TURNED THE ANDERLECHT PITCH INTO A QUAGMIRE.

THE MATCH EXPLODED IN THE SECOND HALF WITH THREE GOALS IN TWO MINUTES. HURST HEADED ENGLAND INTO A TWO-GOAL LEAD AFTER A SOPHISTICATED ANGLE MOVE BETWEEN BALL, HUGHES, AND PETERS, BUT BELGIUM HIT BACK IMMEDIATELY WHEN DOCKY NETTED FROM A FREE KICK JUST OUTSIDE THE PENALTY ARE.

A MINUTE LATER, HOWEVER, BALL POUNCED TO SCORE AGAIN AFTER A SHOT FROM HURST HAD BEEN DEFLECTED. DESPITE THREATENING ATTACKS, ENGLAND RETAINED THEIR ADVANTAGE UNTIL THE END.
