TRANSCRIPT: DRAPER: (SEQ 3)"The United States intends to make every effort to continue working on the Lebanese situation. We discussed the future here today, in the Prime Minister's office - we had a good talk. Of course, the shattering experience of Bashir Gemayel's assassination yesterday has complicated the problem before us but we are going to move forward with determination."

HADDAD: (SEQ 4)"This assassination is not only directed against the person of Bashir Gemayel, it is directed against Lebanon and against all the Lebanese people and that's something ... I can't describe it, this catastrophe, and I can't put it into words and I an very much worried what is going to happen afterwards. I am worried about the civil war which is going to happen and I hope that the Lebanese, all of them, Falangist, Moslems and others and all other Christians will be aware of their responsibilities and not to encourage any civil war or any other retaliation action." (AS HEARD)

WEINBERGER: (SEQ 5)"It is a great personal tragedy. A great tragedy for the basic cause I think."

REPORTER:"How does this bode for the President's peace initiative?"

WEINBERGER:"Well, I just ... obviously we wouldn't be able to answer that till we know who his successor will be but certainly the President-elect Gemayel was a very strong supporter of the President's initiative and a very strong supporter of the United States."

Background: United States Deputy Secretary of State Morris Draper met Israel's foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir on September 15 as part of Washington's new Middle East Peace initiative. After the meeting, Mr. Draper expressed optimism that the peace plan would go forward but admitted that the discussions with Israel. apart from the blow dealt to efforts to find a solution tot he Palestinians problem, Mr. Gemayel's death has raised fears that civil war may break out in Lebanon. Major Saad Haddad, commander of the pro-Israeli forces that have controlled the border zone with Israel for many years, put this fear into words when he said that he hoped all Moslems and christians factions would try to avert the crisis. U.S. Defence Secretary Caspar Weinberger expressed his grief at the news of the assassination. He said the future of President Reagan's peace plan would depend on the extent of the next Lebanese President's support of the United States.
