Background: The Italian tanker, Alberto Bennati, stricken by the fierce winds of Hurricane " Faith " in the Western Atlantic, is limping to a United States port today (3 September ). A. U.S. Coast Guard cutter is escorting the Bennati.
The Coast Guard cutter in the film, the Mendota, has now been replaced by the cutter "Chilula" which is an ocean-going tug and can take the tanker in tow, if necessary.
The Bennati is heading toward port under her own power of about five knots an will arrive sometime Monday morning (5 Sept)
The ship sent an SOS call Thursday morning (1 Sept), saying her chief engineer was dead, her engines stopped and her crew of 40 imperiled by Hurricane Faith, which was producing 35-foot waves and 55-knot winds in the area at the time.
Coast Guard ships and planes hurried to her aid, but the heavy seas and high winds had pushed the disabled tanker about 60 miles northward by the time rescue craft arrived at dusk Thursday.
The Bennati was on her way from New York to Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela when she was caught by the hurricane. Her captain is Domenico Haglich of Trieste. The name of the dead chief engineer is not yet known.
The Bennati's sister ship, the tanker Luis, burned in the Persian Gulf in June of 1966, taking the lives of 31 crewmen.
