Background: INTRODUCTION Tunisia and Algeria met in a second round African Zone qualifying match for the World Cup football competition in Tunis on Sunday (6 February).
SYNOPSIS: The match was played at the Olympic Stadium in Tunis before a crowd of 50,000 spectators, including about 5,000 Algerians. But the Visiting team gave their supporters very little to cheer about.
The Algerian side was not in good form, and on many occasions their attacks broke down in midfield, thus allowing the Tunisian side to counter-attack. The busiest man in the Algerian team was the goalkeeper, and it was only his good reflexes that kent the Tunisians from scoring form several moves.
The home side took the lead in the 58th minute when a shot from Akid went into the net after a deflection of an Algerian player.
Several times Algeria attacked the Tunisian goal, but poor work by their forwards stopped them scoring. Tunisia were the more aggressive side throughout, and their players almost completely dominated the match. This was despite missing a penalty in the first half of the game.
Tunisia increased their lead in the 74th minute when Kaabi took advantage of a mistake in the Algerian defence. After the second goal Tunisia didn't relax, but kept attacking.
The visiting team mounted a few attacks late in the match, but poor shooting prevented them form reducing the Tunisian lead.
Tunisia continued to attack, trying to add to their two goals and only more good goal-keeping prevented them. The second leg of the World Cup qualify match will be played in Algiers on 27 February.
