Background: EAST GERMAN TROOPS MOVED UP TO THE BERLIN BORDER LATE DECEMBER 3 AS POLICE AND CIVILIAN WORKERS BEGAN REINFORCING THE WALL AT THE FRIEDRICHSTRASSE CROSSING POINT - AN OFFICIAL EAST GERMAN STATEMENT SAID THE BUILDING WORK WAS TO "GUARANTEE SECURITY".

DRILLING WAS HEARD FROM THE EAST GERMAN SIDE OF THE BORDER WHERE WORKERS WERE REMOVING PARTS OF THE CONCRETE SNAKE OBSTACLE AND WERE DIGGING IN THE ROAD. AT LEAST TEN CRANES WERE LAYING CONCRETE SLABS AT THE SIDES, WHILE OTHER WORKERS DISMANTLED OVERHEAD TRAM WIRES. TWO LARGE EARTH EXCAVATORS, WITH THEIR ENGINES RUNNING, WERE ALSO SEEN.

WESTERN COMMANDANTS REACTED IMMEDIATELY. SOME FORTY AMERICAN TROOPS MARCHED UP TO THE CROSSING POINT AND SET UP TWO MACHINE-GUNS AND AN ANTI-TANK BAZOOKA. SIX OTHER EAST-WEST CROSSING POINTS WERE BEING REINFORCED THAT NIGHT. A LORRYLOAD OF BRITISH TROOPS IN FULL BATTLE ORDER WAS SENT TO THE SANDKRUG BRIDGE, THE ONLY CROSSING POINT IN THE BRITISH SECTOR, AND A SARACEN ARMOURED CAR LAY IN RESERVE A MILE BACK.

THE EAST GERMAN AUTHORITIES SAID THAT TRAFFIC THROUGH THE SEVEN CHECK-POINTS WOULD NOT BE AFFECTED BUT THE BUILDING WORK WOULD TAKE SOME TIME.

EARLIER THAT DAY, A TWENTY-FOOT SECTION OF THE BORDER WALL COLLAPSED IN THE COPENHAGENERSTRASSE IN REINICKENDORF. WEST GERMAN POLICE ATTRIBUTED THIS TO A KEEN FROST, FOLLOWED BY HIGH WINDS.
