Background: What the War Office termed a "normal move", took place on Thursday, July 17th., when 650 officers and men of the 1st. Bn. Durham Light Infantry boarded the troopship "Devonshire" at Southampton, bound for Cyprus.
These men had travelled down from Barnard Castle, Durham, and Richmond, Yorkshire, half a day's journey to Southampton. When they arrived they crowded round the refreshment buffets for their last cup of tea. For many of the troops this will be their first overseas service, a large number of them are National Servicemen.
Other troop movements from Britain within the last 36 hours included the dispatch of the 19th. Infantry Brigade from Stansted, Essex, on Friday morning. Officially the Brigade is to assist in the internal security of Cyprus.
