Background: For the first time in the history of the Republic, Kenya is participating in the United Nations Universal Children's Day, on Monday (5 October).

Thousands of children staged a colourful procession to the city stadium in Nairobi on Sunday (4 October), and there a display of group dances and choirs was held by the schools of the city.

The occasion is being celebrated throughout Kenya, as it is in 95 nations of the world which belong to the United Nations. The day has been celebrated since 1954.

Many public dignitaries attended the celebrations in Nairobi, including the Minister for Cooperatives and Social Services, Mr. Masinde Muliro.

Mr. Muliro, addressing the participants and audience, stressed the problems facing Kenyan children. Educational problems were important, he said, but problems of malnutrition and destitution were paramount.

The minister called for more contributions to the Child Welfare Society of Kenya, as the resources of the government were insufficient to look after all the children. Among its work for children the Society had provided the leadership for the celebrations.

In line with this year's theme "Education in Child" the programme culminated in a conference on child care, opened at Limuru Conference Centre by the Chief Justice Mr. Kitili Mwendwa.
