Background: It was about fifteen years ago that the battle of the Atlantic began to turn the tide of the war on the high seas, when the Allied navies finally broke the back of the German Atlantic submarine force and enable merchant shipping to reach beleaguered Europe with greater safety. To commemorate this momentous victory Sunday, 4th May, was chosen as an appropriate day for thanksgiving and special ceremonies were performed throughout Canada. In the capital Ottawa, there was a special guest of honour. Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, husband of Queen Juliana, who is in Canada for a short tour.

For this occasion four hundred of the Dutch community in the city were given places of honour in front of the crowd at the memorial to those killed in the fighting.

With Rear-Admiral Tisdall, vice-chief of the Royal Canadian Navy staff, the Prince laid a wreath on the monument.

When he turned to leave the twelve hundred-strong crowd, and especially the Dutch contingent, pressed so close round the Prince that the police had great difficulty in clearing a path for him.

Next stop in his tour is the city of Montreal.
